Toluene Solution The liquid LDPE and PP are then transferred to the next holding container, where hot toluene is added. The toluene reacts with the polypropylene, such that the plastic becomes dissolved in the liquid.
About Toluene Toluene is found in gasoline and aviation fuel. This is the source for the toluene we use at our plant. Expenses are at a minimum because the toluene is filtered and reused at the plant. It must be changed only occasionally. We are in effect recycling at our recycling plant. Precautions are taken because toluene is flammable and toxic. The toluene is physically separated from the previous step in which the plastic is heated to 450°F. Metal is securely grounded to prevent static electricity. The area is well-ventilated to prevent buildup of the fumes. However, toluene is stable when exposed to air, moisture, and heat. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has stated that "toluene is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicy to humans."
